The Coconut Oil Craze

The Coconut Oil Craze by Ruth Romano

There has been a huge buzz in the media in recent months around the benefits of using coconut oil in your beauty routine. But despite appearing to be a new craze the truth is that it has been a staple in tropical regions of the world for many centuries.

Coconut oil is an edible oil extracted from coconut kernels. It is a white solid substance which melts on contact with the skin. It is unique because about 49% of the fatty acids in coconut oil is lauric acid which is recognised for its antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties.

For skincare opt for virgin coconut oil which is made from the first pressing of the raw coconut flesh with no additives.

After Sun

Quickly absorbed by the skin after a day in the sun to deeply nourish and provide a healthy glow.

Conditioner

For an intense hair conditioning treatment apply to hair and scalp about half an hour before washing.

Make up Remover

Remove oil based make up easily with coconut oil. It is particularly effective for removing waterproof mascara.

Hand Cream

Soften and hydrate dry, rough hands and soften cuticles at the same time.

Foot Cream

Helps to soften hard skin and heal cracked heels. A really useful natural remedy for runners.

Shaving Cream

For a smooth razor glide with the additional benefit of smooth and soft skin.

Eye Cream

After a late night reduce dark circles with a few dabs of coconut oil.

Exfoliator

For the face or body mix coconut oil with sugar or fine oatmeal to remove dead skin cells and reveal smooth skin.

Age Spots

The powerful antioxidants in coconut oil may help to fade age spots.

Massage Oil

For a relaxing rub down after a strenuous workout to soothe tired and aching muscles.

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the skincare uses for coconut oil. Have you tried it in your beauty routine?
